The distinction between equality and equity would somewhere correspond with the distinction between classical liberalism and social liberalism. Equality would imply ensuring that every individual has an equal opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents. In contrast, equity would imply giving people what they need. The difference between the two can be emphasized in the way that although both seek to promote fairness, they try to do so in different ways. Equality seeks to achieve this by treating everyone n the same way; however, equity achieves this by treating people differently on the basis of their need. The idea of equity forms the basis of affirmative action or social welfare policies.
